Letters applying to emigrate to South Africa (many unsuccessful) give a wealth of genealogical information and a window on life in 1819.
Sue Mackay descends directly from three of the actual 1820 settlers. In the course of her research she discovered the correspondence at the National Archives and realised that all the letters needed to be transcribed. The transcriptions are now online on the website of the Genealogical Society of South Africa.
